Search Engine Optimization
You may have seen “SEO” before and wondered what it was. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization – and it is the process whereby a website is tweaked to increase its search engine rankings, bringing in more potential customers based on their internet searches.
The process includes:
- Determining the keywords potential customers will be typing into Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., when they are looking for your product or service.
- Using those keywords and other descriptive text in META tags and alt tags. These are classification codes that you and your visitors do not see, but they tell search engines what your site is about. These tags will be different on every single page.
- Tweaking the content on each of the website pages to make sure it is effective – that it uses those keywords while being concise and readable.
- Monitoring site analytics on a regular basis – every 2 to 4 weeks is optimal – and continually tweaking the keywords and descriptive phrases in the META tags, alt tags, and content.
The bottom line is that your site may look wonderful but if no time is spent on optimizing it for search, you will not get a lot of new traffic to boost your sales. This would be kind of like printing up thousands of fliers and then leaving them in a box in the back of your car and never handing them out.
